Linode (Akamai Cloud)
Predictable flat-rate cloud now riding the Akamai backbone — strong docs, $5 entry tier, the cheapest egress in the developer-cloud bracket
Pick when you want predictable flat pricing on a Tier-1 network, top-class docs, and the cheapest egress overage in the DigitalOcean/Vultr bracket ($0.005/GB). Avoid if you need Windows, ARM, a built-in CDN, or live chat support — and watch the slow-burn brand merger into Akamai if you care about UX continuity.
Overview
Linode is one of the original developer-cloud companies (founded 2003), acquired by Akamai in March 2022 and now branded as Akamai Cloud — though the linode.com domain still redirects most flows to akamai.com. The platform runs KVM compute instances on x86 (AMD EPYC + Intel Xeon, with the latest Dedicated G8 tier on EPYC Zen 5) across 25+ core regions, with predictable flat-rate pricing that has not used first-term discount splits. The Akamai acquisition layered enterprise-grade Prolexic DDoS protection and a massive global PoP network on top, but the trade-offs are well-known: no Windows or ARM images, no bundled CDN, no live chat support, port 25 blocked by default, and managed Database pricing that has crept toward AWS RDS territory.
Trust score breakdown
Cloud Manager has been refined for 20+ years and is consistently rated alongside DigitalOcean as the cleanest UI in the developer-cloud space. linode-cli, Terraform / Pulumi providers, and a stable API cover automation. Marketplace ships 200+ one-click apps including WordPress, LAMP, Docker, GitLab, Mastodon. The Akamai brand merger (linode.com → akamai.com redirects, support emails from akamai.com) is the single biggest UX drag for new users — long-time customers are largely past it.
40 Gbps inbound on every plan, 4-12 Gbps outbound, NVMe SSD on Premium and GPU tiers. Better Stack 2026 benchmarks measured Geekbench 6 single-core 1,343 / multi-core 2,490 on Dedicated, 94.5k combined 4k IOPS, 7.98 Gbits/sec network throughput from NYC at 20.1ms latency. Premium tier on AMD EPYC Zen 5 lands at the high end of the developer-cloud bracket. GPU offering (RTX 4000 Ada through RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell, plus Akamai Inference Cloud H100) is more capable than DigitalOcean's mid-2025 baseline.
99.99% per-region uptime SLA backed by service credits, established 2003 (one of the longest-running developer clouds), and now riding the Akamai Tier-1 backbone after the 2022 acquisition. 26+ active core compute regions provide failover headroom most competitors lack. Long-term Reddit and HN sentiment is consistent: incidents are rare, postmortems are public, and the platform has no record of large-scale data loss events.
24/7 phone access is genuinely rare at this tier and useful when something is on fire — but the lack of any live chat at all is unusual in 2026. Free-tier ticket response is uneven per Trustpilot and the community forum: long-time customers report fast technical replies, while new-account / fraud-flag tickets routinely wait 24-48h. Documentation quality is best-in-class and partly compensates. Linode Managed at $100/mo per instance is the path to guaranteed incident response.
Pricing is genuinely transparent — no first-term promo, no renewal jump, public per-plan specs and hourly + monthly side by side, public 99.99% SLA, public bandwidth overage rate ($0.005/GB), public status page with incident postmortems. The SMTP block, backup-cost-as-25%-of-plan, and forthcoming Object Storage request charges (Oct 1 2026) are all clearly disclosed. The only real blemish is the absence of any refund / money-back policy.
Flat-rate pricing with no first-term/renewal split is honest. The $5/mo Nanode and $0.005/GB egress overage (cheapest in class) are real wins, and the $24/mo 4GB Shared is competitive with DigitalOcean. The headline weakness: Hetzner CPX22 at ~$8/mo offers 2-3x the specs, and managed Database pricing has crept above DigitalOcean's hobby tier. The premium buys docs, Akamai DDoS protection, the network backbone, and US/global region density — defensible if you need those.

Capabilities at a glance
SMTP port 25 (outbound mail)
UNBLOCK ON REQUESTOutbound SMTP ports 25, 465, and 587 are blocked by default on every Linode created after November 5, 2019. The block is lifted via support ticket after you (1) configure valid forward DNS A records and rDNS records on the Linode, and (2) confirm in the ticket that your mailing practices are CAN-SPAM compliant and identify the specific Linode you intend to send from. Unblock is routinely granted to legitimate use cases — unlike DigitalOcean which has no documented unblock path. Self-hosted mail (Mail-in-a-Box, Mailcow, Postfix relay) is viable on Linode once the ticket is processed.

Support
Response SLA: No published SLA on free standard support. Phone is answered 24/7. Linode Managed ($100/mo per instance) adds dedicated incident response.
Free standard support is ticket + phone only — no live chat at any tier, which is unusual in this bracket. Reddit and Trustpilot reports in 2025-2026 cluster around two patterns: long-time customers say tickets get fast, technical replies; new accounts and account-activation issues sometimes wait 24-48h with limited resolution. Documentation (linode.com/docs and the community Q&A) is widely cited as the strongest in the developer-cloud space alongside DigitalOcean.

What to watch out for in pricing
-
Bandwidth overage billed at $0.005/GB egress. Each plan includes 1-20 TB outbound transfer prorated by the time the instance was active in the month, pooled across all instances on the account. Inbound is always free. Excess outbound is billed at $0.005/GB — currently the cheapest egress overage rate in the developer-cloud bracket (DigitalOcean and Vultr charge $0.01/GB). No throttling, no surprise multiplier.
-
Backups cost 25% of the plan price. Backup Service is a flat surcharge — 25% of the Linode's monthly cost — and includes daily, 2x weekly, and 1x bi-weekly snapshots plus an on-demand snapshot slot. There is no per-GB backup charge regardless of how much data is backed up. Cheap and predictable, but easy to forget when budgeting the cheapest plans (Backup on a Nanode 1GB adds $1.25/mo).
-
No money-back guarantee or free trial. Linode does not publish a refund policy or trial period. The closest path is the periodic $100 / 60-day signup credit promotion when available. Compare to providers that ship a 30-day guarantee if you need a clean exit.
-
Object Storage request charges launching Oct 1 2026. Object Storage is currently $5/mo flat for 250 GB + 1 TB transfer. From October 1 2026 onward, Class A operations (PUT, LIST) and Class B operations (GET, lower-overhead reads) will start incurring per-request charges with a base monthly free quota. Plan headroom for high-request workloads.
-
Managed Databases priced near AWS RDS, not budget tier. Managed PostgreSQL/MySQL on Dedicated G7 hardware starts around $81.60/mo for a single node and $246/mo for an HA cluster. That is meaningfully more expensive than DigitalOcean's $15/mo Basic node — Linode positions the product as production-grade, not a hobby-tier option.
Known pitfalls
-
Brand identity drift since the Akamai acquisition
Linode was acquired by Akamai in March 2022 and the brand has been gradually subsumed into 'Akamai Cloud'. linode.com URLs now 301-redirect to akamai.com, support emails come from akamai.com but link back to linode.com, and naming inside the Cloud Manager mixes both brands. Long-time customers are mostly unbothered; new users repeatedly report confusion on Reddit and the community forum. Functionally everything works, but plan for a less coherent first-30-day UX than competitors with a unified brand.

No bundled CDN despite Akamai owning the largest CDN
Akamai operates the world's largest commercial CDN, but it is not bundled into Linode plans. There is no equivalent of DigitalOcean's free Spaces CDN or Vultr's free CDN tier — public sites need to be fronted by Akamai Edge Delivery (a separate, sales-led product) or by Cloudflare. For most developer-cloud workloads, Cloudflare in front of a Linode is the standard setup.

No live chat support at any tier
Free-tier support is ticket + 24/7 phone — no live chat is available even on paid Linode Managed ($100/mo per instance). Phone access is genuinely useful for production incidents, but the lack of chat is an outlier in 2026: DigitalOcean Standard ($99/mo), Vultr, and Hostinger all offer chat. New-account / fraud-flag tickets in particular show 24-48h delays in 2025 Trustpilot reviews. Factor this in if you need fast async help.

No Windows Server, no ARM compute
Linode is Linux-only on x86 KVM. There is no Windows Server option (the platform does not support Microsoft licensing or customer-uploaded Windows ISOs) and no ARM/Ampere/Graviton tier — every plan including the new Dedicated G8 runs on Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC. If you need Windows or are running ARM workloads to save 30-40% on compute, look at Vultr (Windows on most plans), Hetzner Cloud (CAX ARM tier), or AWS/Oracle for ARM.

Managed Databases priced near AWS RDS, not budget tier
Managed PostgreSQL/MySQL starts around $81.60/mo for a single node and $246/mo for HA on Dedicated G7 hardware — meaningfully higher than DigitalOcean's $15/mo Basic node. The product is positioned as production-grade with daily backups and point-in-time recovery on HA, but it is not a hobby-tier option. For small projects, self-hosting Postgres on a $24/mo Linode 4GB is the budget path.

Account fraud detection occasionally false-flags new signups
Multiple 2025 Trustpilot reviews report new accounts being denied activation with the generic 'fraudulent behavior' message — including users explicitly declining the signup credit and offering to pay upfront. The fraud filter is presumably tuned to handle Akamai-scale signup volume, but it produces false positives that the support queue does not always resolve quickly. If you sign up from a new email + new payment combo on a residential VPN, expect possible friction.

Community pulse
Sentiment in early 2026 is steady and well-formed: Linode is the 'safe, boring, well-documented' choice — the developer-cloud people pick when they want predictable pricing, the cheapest egress in the bracket, and a real 24/7 phone line, and the one they leave for Hetzner when they want 2-3x the specs per dollar or for AWS when they need a managed service ladder Linode doesn't offer. Reddit (r/sysadmin, r/webdev, r/selfhosted) consistently praises the docs and the Akamai-backed network, while Trustpilot (3.8/5) clusters complaints around new-account fraud flagging and uneven free-tier ticket response times. The Akamai brand merger is the most-discussed friction point — functionally everything still works, but the UX continuity has slipped. The cheapest-egress-in-class story and the new RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU tier are the bright spots people are talking about.
